Bottle no. AT 665. Matured for 17 months in new American oak barriques of such quality that it doesn’t go to war with the fruit – or is it simply that the fruit has sucked it up? It really doesn’t matter any more that some will politely move to one side and let others buy (and even drink) this wine, revelling in the mega amounts of fruit, oak and tannins.

Very deep garnet-purple colored, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Bin 707 has gorgeous crème de cassis, cedar, dark chocolate, spice cake and menthol notes, with a yeasty/meaty undercurrent and a waft of espresso. Medium-bodied, firm and fine in the mouth, it is intense yet elegant with great length and expression. This is another Penfolds offering that is so taut and primary at this stage, it would be a shame to open it without 2-3 more years in bottle.
